Gabriela Calvache was born and raised in Ecuador. “La Mala Noche”, her debut feature, premiered at SXSW 2019 and was nominated for the GameChanger Award. It also won Best International Film at the NYLFF 2019 and is now the Ecuadorean Oscar entry for 2020 Best Foreign Language Film. This intense thriller tells the story of a woman who turns to prostitution and then must surrender her income to the leader of a human trafficking ring. But when her daughter's illness and a drug addiction prevent her from delivering her usual share, she will have to find a way to stop obeying and take justice into her own hands.
