Carla Simón
Carla Simón grew up in a small Catalan village, and graduated in Film Studies from the University of Barcelona, and after that she also studied at the University of California and at the London Film School. Inspired by her own childhood, Carla’s debut feature Summer 1993 tells the story of a six-year-old orphan who is forced to live with her aunt and uncle after her parents die of AIDS. It premiered at the Berlinale 2017 where it won the Best First Film Award and the Generation Kplus Grand Prix Jury Award. In 2018, Carla received the Women in Motion Young Talent Prize at Cannes. Summer 1993 was received by critics as a luminous, moving –but never sentimental– debut, which also represented Spain in the foreign-language Oscar race in 2017.
